Mombasa Sports Club Hockey (MSC Men) Head Coach Fredrick Arika has confirmed that several players will miss this weekends travels for several reasons. Notably midfielder Antony “Onyi” Onyango will miss this weekend’s double fixture against UON Cubs and Technical Uni of Kenya after sustaining an ankle injury recently that sets him out for several weeks. The setback comes just as MSC Men were upping their training regime following a month-long Oct-Nov break, during which the team had only Coast League Matches.
Coach Arika expressed concern over the timing of the injury and signified that the situation is under control. “Onyi picked up the injury in an off the field incident. It’s a blow because he’s been an influential part of our midfield setup,” Arika said. “However, we’re observing his recovery carefully, and we expect him to be back in time for the visit by Daystar University in early December.”
On the other hand the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) will have its Coastal Circuit ongoing in the same weekend and therefore more players will be on University Duty as compared to Club Duty, with the likes of Wilson Wechuli and Charles Okwiri among others engaged for Technical Univerisy of Mombasa. The coach noted that while these players absence will be felt, the team remains focused and prepared for the upcoming clash. “Life has been happening around us, and we hope the little training and more so experience after the long break, should push us through and the boys look ready.
Arika also emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s rhythm despite the setback. “Injuries are a part of the game, but our depth and spirit are what keep us going. The squad is motivated and eager to get back into competition,” he concluded.
